We use industry standard data protection technology to protect from external threats. We do not sell, or provide your information to unaffiliated third parties, except in limited circumstances described in the Privacy Notice on SCE.com. Spoofing
What is Spoofing?
Caller ID Spoofing is a practice in which a caller deliberately falsifies the information on your caller ID display to disguise their identity.
Recently, there has been an increase in caller ID ‘spoofing’ whereby third parties use SCE’s phone numbers to lead people to believe that the calls are coming from us. In many cases, the “spoofers” misrepresent themselves as SCE employees or partners.
Common Complaints Related to Spoofed Phone Calls
- Calls demanding payment over the phone.
- Calls made outside of normal business hours (for example, 2 a.m.)
- Callers asked about the customer’s usage or meter information.
- Customers asked to provide social security numbers and other personal information.
Types of Scams to Be Aware Of
Urgency Scams
A scammer calls you to make a payment or you will be disconnected, and they stress the urgency and discourage you from verifying with others.
Discount Scams
The scammer calls you and states that you have a past due bill and will give you a discount if you pay them over the phone.
Real Estate Scams
Scammers are looking at recent home listings and calling the Realtor to inform them that the electricity at the home will be disconnected and to inform the seller to call a number to schedule a payment to the scammers.
Fake Edison Website
Use only trusted websites. A new scam using a fake utility website targeting customers searching on the internet about how to connect their new electricity service is on the rise. You should look for sce.com in the URL portion of the webpage to ensure the correct website is being used.
Pre-paid Cards
The scammer calls you and directs you to a store to have you buy a pre-paid card and tells the customer not to let the clerk know it is for a utility bill or you will be charged an additional fee.
Barcode Scam
The customer is sent a barcode via text or email and told to send money through the barcode.
